I just love harvest time in September! My in-laws have plum trees and my mom has apple and pear trees, so September = the 4 year old expert fruit picker bringing home a big ol’ harvest!
We found ourselves with way more fruit than we could eat before it would go bad so I thought I’d attempt an apple/pear/plum butter combination. I wasn’t sure how it would turn out; I’ve only ever tried apple butter, but I was pleasantly surprised!
This fruit butter is amazing on toast, in oatmeal, over yogurt, or my personal favorite, on crackers with brie cheese. YUM.
Here’s the super easy recipe!
5 apples and 5 pears, cored and sliced (you can leave the peels)
10-15 plums, pitted and halved
3/4 cup pure maple syrup
1tbsp cinnamon
1/8-1/4 cup white sugar (sweeten to your taste)
Place fruit and maple syrup in crockpot and cook on low for 16-24 hours. Stir occasionally (but don’t worry about leaving it unstirred overnight).
When the fruit is completely softened, pour everything in a blender (I used my Ninja) and give it a few pulses, until there are no noticeable pieces of skin.
Pour back into crockpot and stir in sugar. Cook on low for another hour or so, skimming off the liquid as if forms.
If you’re going to refrigerate your fruit butter, pour into mason jars and allow to cool on the counter before refrigerating.
Another option is canning, using either the pressure cooker or water bath method. The Pioneer Woman has a great tutorial here.
I’ve done the canning method before and it was super fun! I ordered up some labels from Etsy that said “Spread the Love” and gave them as Christmas gifts.
The great thing about this recipe is that it’s pretty hard to mess up. The measurements don’t have to be dead on and if your crockpot switches to “warm”, just rev it back up to “low” when you think about it. Crack the lid every once in awhile (to let some of the moisture evaporate), stir every once in awhile…it’s totally low maintenance!
